Also food shows the exuberance and warmth of Sicilian people, with their intense flavours and the passion for good and genuine products, many of which boasts the DOP or IGT quality mark. Some products are recognised all over the world to be top-rate quality, like extra-virgin olive oil, juicy red oranges and the sweet grapes of Canicattì, Pachino tomatoes and Pantelleria capers, prickly pears and the olives of Nocellara del Belice.
This region is famous for its mouth-watering street-food, like arancini (fried rice balls), pane e panelle (bread filled with gram flour fritters) or the sandwich with spleen called in Sicilian “pane ca meusa”.
The main dishes are usually pasta, like the delicious Pasta alla norma or Anelletti al forno or fish dishes. But one of the most scrumptious specialities of Sicily are the pastries, like cannoli, prepared with ricotta cheese or almonds.
The hinterland offers, just like the coast, many typical tasty products, like Ragusano and pecorino cheeses or cold cuts like sausages and Sant’Angelo salami, without forgetting different types of crispy bread, like the loaves of Dittaino.
All those flavours can be combined with some exquisite wines like Nero d’Avola, Zibibbo or Malvasia.
